Stickman – Jack & Jill live

Back in May 2001 we did a Mighty Atom Showcase show at Barons nightclub in Swansea. We were newly going as a record label and we had our first four bands signed, so we figured we should put on a show. I remember it was a pretty classic evening. Barons was a right dive by then and the perfect spot for our first 'Showcase'. It was pretty full and we all had an amazing time. The four bands performing that night - Stickman, Denzel, Powder and Goatboy. Now I remember we did have video cameras to hand but I don't seem to have anything much in the way of video footage remaining, but we did also get all four bands recorded to multitrack tape. That tape has sat in a draw for the the last 17 years. Last month I found it, got it converted to something I can work with now and have started mixing all four bands. First up for that show Stickman and their epic track Jack & Jill from the EP Eat, Sleep, Breath.

The Headcase Ladz – Funky Fresh

Now for something different... We have always been best known I guess as a rock/emo label, but that was not particularly our intention at the outset. We just love good music - all forms - in 2003 we put out this record for Welsh hip hop supremos The Headcase Ladz - do enjoy!

The Spill Canvas – The Tide

In November 2004 we released Sunsets and Car Crashes in the Uk, the debut album by South Dakota's The Spill Canvas. I have great memories of their first tour in the UK - including in Bridgend where the van broke down. It took me quite a while to get the AA to us and we spent quite a few hours in the middle of the night freezing our asses off while it poured down with good old Welsh rain. Nick, Landon and Joe though we're so cool about it. They really are some of the nicest guys I ever worked with. The Spill Canvas are one of only two Mighty Atom bands which are still together. Today I have a 2015 session they did for Sixwill, a brilliant version of the lead track from Sunsets and Car Crashes. Do check this out 🙂

Hondo Maclean – EPK

Here's another rarity. This is an EPK I put together for Hondo Maclean I guess sometime in 2003. We used to mail these EPKs out on VHS tapes. We hadn't discovered YouTube at that point. Anyway this clip has some interviews and some nice bits of video of the band live and in the studio. Enjoy.

The Lucky Nine – Hibernate

In March 2005 we released an EP for The Lucky Nine - they were a bit of a British alt rock 'supergroup' including members from earthtonne9, A and Hundred Reasons: Colin Doran, Richie Mills, Ben Doyle, Jay Rowe and Daniel P. Carter. Daniel, amongst many successes in the music industry in various bands and as a song writer, has gone on to host the Radio 1 Rockshow. Great, great band, they went on after our EP to release their album True Crown Foundation Songs: Hymns Of History And Hidden Ritual on Hassle records. Here's the video from our EP - Hibernate. Directed by Adam Mason and featuring our own Chessie Davies as a mostly naked ghost...

Funeral For A Friend – The Art Of American Football

Here's a bit of a rarity - it's a video I put together for the Funeral For a Friend EP release back end of 2002. Essentially just a collage of a bunch of early FFAF gigs we had videoed. Some quite cool early footage of the band in here. At the time I don't think we did anything with this video, so it's just been sitting on a DV tape in my cupboard for 16 years

Will Simpson

Great shot of Will Simpson from Brigade sitting in the label office in Mighty Atom around 2005 I guess. I love that he has an Aconite Thrill t-shirt on and there's God Machine by Liberty 37 sitting on the table. Will got married yesterday so big congrats to him and his wife Sinead and best of luck for the future!

3 Colours Red – Repeat To Fade

At the start of 2003 Funeral For a Friend had been picked up by Sanctuary Management. They had another band on their roster who were looking for an indie label to put out a single as the start of a reunion tour and would we be interested. That band turned out to be 3 Colours Red. Roger and I had been massive 3CR fans since the mid 90's. Normally just releasing a single with no album makes no sense from a business perspective, but this was 3CR. We considered it for a micro second and said we were up for it. One of my enduring memories is of me and Roger going up to the Sanctuary offices in Olympia, being walked to the boardroom down a long corridor covered in hundreds of gold discs (mostly Iron Maiden) and sitting down at this enormous table opposite Chris McCormack, Pete Vuckovic and their manager to agree the single deal. The saying goes 'Don't meet your heroes' but that's bollocks. Chris and Pete became and still are good friends. I guess they liked us enough as well to go on after the single to do the album with us at Mighty Atom Studios.…

Pointblank – Leave Me Alone

So back in 1999, this is where it all started. This video of Roger's band Pointblank was filmed in the studio in his converted garage in Caswell. I had just got a DV camera - this was my first attempt at a video. It was in this room around this time we decided to start Mighty Atom - originally we were thinking commercial recording studio, and possible band management. The label came later although it turned out our first release was actually recorded in here - Powder - The Art Of Self Offense. This video is also very special because it features BJ on drums now sadly not with us anymore - so this one goes out to BJ - hope you're still smiling wherever you are boyo!
